Mound dedication

Kiwanian Marilyn Romanchock is a member of the Westwood Club in Johnstown. She also is manager of the Northwest Savings Bank office that recently moved into a newly constructed building in the Westwood Plaza, suburban Johnstown. When the bank decided to award $1,000 to an organization as part of its grand opening, she immediately thought of the Westwood club. The money was to be used for a beautification project in the area served by the bank. The club decided to use the money to improve an area at the bottom of a flagpole on an area known as the Mound overlooking the Inclined Plane, a hillside railway connecting Westmont Borough and the City of Johnstown. The work included removing all of the material at the base of the flagpole; laying new paving stone; building two new benches; and finishing, grading and seeding the area. “We felt that a beautification project would be a good use for our money,” Marilyn said. Brad Hindman, president of the Westwood club, expressed his appreciation to the bank for providing money and designating it for a beautification and improvement project. “It was deteriorating,” said Westwood Kiwanis member Bob Rosage who coordinated the project for the Westwood club. “Northwest Savings provided the incentive to get it done.” Also involved with the project were Hilltop Nurseries Inc., and R. I. Lampus of Pittsburgh. Following completion of the project, a dedication ceremony was held. Instead of a ribbon cutting a blue tarp was pulled off to reveal four of the paving stones engraved with the names of the project participants on them. As part of its service to the community, the Westwood club also puts up and maintains the American Flags at the entrance to the Westwood Plaza in Lower Yoder Township, at the former Stutzman School, and along Luzerne Street in Westmont as well as a display of state flags along Edgehill Drive across from the Incline.
