Club Reaches Eliminate Model Club Goal

posted on October 4, 2017 04:55 pm

Have you heard of maternal neonatal tetanus? In underdeveloped countries around the world, maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) has quickly turned the joy of childbirth into tragedy. MNT kills one baby every fifteen minutes. Its effects are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. There is little hope of survival. And, tetanus kills mothers, too. MNT is caused when tetanus spores, found in soil everywhere, come into contact with open cuts during childbirth. The disease strikes the poorest of the poor, the geographically hard to reach, and those without health care. Yet, MNT is highly preventable. Just three doses of vaccine, at a cost of only $1.80 per immunization, protect mothers, who then pass on the immunity to their future babies. Together, Kiwanis International and UNICEF joined forces in 2010 to stop this disease by introducing The ELIMINATE Campaign. The Kiwanis International campaign goal of $110 million would eliminate MNT in 43 countries in Africa, East Asia, and South Asia. Although this was met, MNT still remains in 16 countries. Early in 2014, the Kiwanis Club of Williamsport established itself as a “model club” in the fight against MNT as part of the Kiwanis ELIMINATE Campaign, by committing to raise $750 per member over a five-year period, a total of $59,250. Using the $1.80 cost per immunization, this would save more than 31,000 lives. Payment of their pledge came from fundraising by the Kiwanis Club of Williamsport through special events and local projects, as well as member donations. Special recognition was available for various levels of giving through the Walter Zeller Kiwanis Fellowship Award. The Club displayed a syringe on a banner at its weekly meetings so the 78 members could monitor payment toward their pledge. On Wednesday, September 6, the Board approved its Club’s final payment and fulfillment of its pledge! The syringe is full! The Kiwanis mission (“Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to serving one child and one community at a time”) is reflected in this campaign to eliminate MNT.
